Bike Shops

RAGBRAI has mobile bike repair vendors along the route every day. For major repairs, these shops are near the larger overnight towns:

Phone Tree — When Tech Fails

Mesh says "delivered" but the person didn't see it. Starlink is down. Mattermost didn't sync. Here is the order of escalation when you cannot reach someone through the app.

  1. Try mesh first — text your last known neighbor.
  2. Silent for 10 min? Don't trust the checkmark. Call their phone directly.
  3. No answer? Call Sarah (SAG). She is the hub.
  4. Sarah unreachable? Call Amber (SAG backup).
  5. Both SAG drivers out? Call Jay.
  6. Nobody on the tree? Call 911. Describe last known location from the live map (screenshot the map daily before rolling).

The Silence Protocol

20 minutes of silence from a rider — SAG texts them. If no reply in 10 more, SAG calls.

2 hours of silence — team convenes at next town, reviews last known position on map.

The "delivered" checkmark lies. Mesh acks the next hop, not the recipient. If a confirmation matters, ask for a reply in your own words, not a thumbs-up.

Analog Fallback

Laminate a paper emergency card for every rider before the trip. On it: team phone numbers, today's hospital, today's meeting point, trailer WiFi password, your medical allergies, emergency contact outside the ride. If nothing works, you hand the card to a stranger and say "please call this person." Paper doesn't need batteries.
